The
colour change from lighter to darker material marks a bedrock, or strath
terrace. The terrace was cut into the lighter, thinly bedded and dipping
calcareous sandstone by lateral erosion of the stream. The darker material
lying on the cut surface consists of sediments deposited by the stream when
it was located at the elevation of the strath terrace. The stream has since
incised to the level on which the people are standing, i.e. it has incised
about three meters since abandoning its former level marked by the terrace. |
