KNP Farming Systems Survey
INTRODUCTION

Khirthar National Park covers about 310,000 hectares. Within its boundaries there is a population of some 50,000 people, possibly more. Most rely on the Park's water and land, growing crops and herding domestic livestock. Given the significant impact that human presence must have upon a National Park, a study of these farming communities and their farming systems was undertaken within the Baseline Survey. The main objectives of the Farming Systems (FS) study were:

  • to decribe commonly-occurring farming systems in KNP;
  • look at the relationships between the farming community and the environment and roles of a National Park;
  • speculate on future trends in farming within the Park's boundaries;
  • consider possible strategies for future management of KNP.

The website provides a summary of the final report, presented as part of the full Baseline Survey, plus selected examples of data and images collected during the months of field studies, February - September 2000.
